A recent report by Counterpoint revealed that Samsung dominated the premium Android smartwatch segment in India. The company grew 295% YoY in Q2, 2022. The growth of the company in the quarter can be attributed to last year’s launched smartwatch series -- Galaxy Watch 4. Now it appears that Samsung is further set to increase its market share in the wearable market with its latest Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The company expects to gain a lot of traction with its new smartwatches. Samsung has improved both the design and features of the latest Galaxy Watches which will be liked by many. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 which is a perfect Android alternative to Apple Watch SE will be picked by people who want a premium smartwatch experience under Rs 30,000. We used this latest affordable premium smartwatch from Samsung and here's our complete review.

Design

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 has borrowed its design aesthetics from its predecessor Galaxy Watch 4. The company made some major design improvements to the Galaxy Watch 4 like ditching the rotating dial and the invisible digital bezel around the screen. But the company has not done anything major to the design of its latest smartwatch. The front of the smartwatch is dominated by an AMOLED display, whereas the rear has a heart rate monitor along with other health sensors. The smartwatch comes with a brushed aluminium frame which offers it its premium look and holds the touchscreen display in place. The right side houses two buttons and features a soft silicone band for a comfortable user experience. The strap of the wearable comes with a perpetual matte texture which tugs to the skin and you will not feel any discomfort.

Despite the bigger battery, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is still light in weight. You will also not feel issues while interacting with the smartwatch or while using the digital bezels. The physical buttons also very well register feedback and the touchscreen display is also quite responsive.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with an IP68 rating which makes it dust, water and swim proof. The wearable also comes with military-grade certification making it withstand drops, knocks and extreme temperatures. The metal frame design and the new way to connect the silicone strap make it look and feel premium. Like the other Samsung smartwatches, this one will also impress you with its design.

Display

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 packs a bright and vibrant display. Both the sizes of the Galaxy Watch 5 sport a circular Super AMOLED display. The 44mm version has a 1.19-inch screen and the 44mm variant packs a 1.39-inch display. Display on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 offers a much better screen resolution as compared to other premium smartwatches available in the market. The smartwatch offers up to 1000 nits of brightness which makes it easy to see under direct sunlight. Samsung has also added some cool and new watch faces which make the display look crispier and bright. Another important upgrade made to Galaxy Watch 5 is in its display. The display on the wearable is made tougher with sapphire crystal. The company claims that the display on the Galaxy Watch 5 is 60% stronger compared to its predecessor.

The smartwatch display offers bright whites and deep blacks which merge into the thin bezels offering a good user experience. The responsive and vibrant display on the Galaxy Watch 5 will be liked by many.

Features and performance

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 runs Wear OS 3 and offers multiple fitness and health tracking features. The all-new Galaxy Watch 5 also comes with a temperature sensor which claims to measure the skin temperature and alert the user about the signs of fever. However, the feature is not very useful and is mainly a gimmick. Samsung also mentioned at the launch that the sensor will improve the overall performance of the smartwatch and that the company is working with the developers to find more particle usage of the technology. So, presently, the temperature sensor is not as useful as expected.

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with OS 3 out of the box. The wear OS 3 works smoothly on the wearable and it also comes with new editions. For instance, now the Google Assistant is available on the smartwatch and it works smoothly. Samsung has also improved its sleep tracking software and now it uses colourful animals to represent different sleeping patterns. You will also receive a designated sleep animal and the Health app then sets you up with a four-week course. The course teaches you about the importance of good sleep and also how you can improve your sleeping patterns. With all these features onboard, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 offers a smooth user experience.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 works with the Samsung Health app which is not new to Galaxy smartwatch users. The app offers a neat, clean and simple user interface. It has a daily activity tracker which keeps track of your steps, activity time and calories burned. Same as its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch 5 also comes with an array of sensors which include heart rate, blood pressure, ECG, body composition, stress tracking, SpO2 and snore detection. The wearable is designed to automatically track multiple workouts and offer a fairly accurate reading.

The smartwatch also delivered correct data when we measured the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. The company has also included its famous BioActive sensor in the smartwatch. The sensor monitors your overall health by measuring your weight, skeletal muscle and BMI. Same as its predecessor, the feature works really well this time also.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with GPS tracking functionality. But we are not really impressed with it as it has to learn more in this department from the likes of Garmin.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 delivers a smooth performance which will be liked by many.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 performs well in the battery department. The smartwatch outperforms its predecessor in terms of battery. Samsung has increased the battery capacity by 13% on the Galaxy Watch 5. The 40mm variant of the smartwatch is backed by a 284mAh battery, whereas the 44mm variant houses a 410mAh battery. If you don't work out regularly and use the smartwatch in power-saving mode then you can easily churn out 2 days of battery life on a single charge.

On the other hand, if you work out regularly and also keep a track of your step count then the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 can easily last for 24 hours. Apart from increasing the battery capacity, Samsung has also improved the charging process. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with a new USB-C ended charger and the smartwatch charges 30% faster when compared to Galaxy Watch 4. Also, you can use the charger cable in any USB Type C adapter to charge the smartwatch.

Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 comes with a starting price tag of Rs 27,999 which makes it an affordable premium smartwatch. The wearable comes with a stylish design and packs all the essential health tracking features. The smartwatch also delivers decent battery life and smooth performance. If you are looking for a good Android smartwatch under the budget of Rs 30000, then you can consider buying the all-new Samsung Galaxy Watch 5.
