OnePlus Nord CE 5G review: Mighty upgrade for budget phone users

Top Features

  • Good Display quality
  • Good battery life and charging speed
  • Promise of software update
OnePlus has launched its second smartphone in its new Nord series of “affordable” Android smartphones. The new Nord CE 5G at a price range of between Rs 22,999 and Rs 27,999 means two things. First, OnePlus doesn’t want to let go of the mid-range market while primarily focusing on the expensive flagship segment. Second, the pricing of the Nord CE 5G suggests that the OnePlus Nord 2, if launched in India, may be priced higher.

But keeping the debate with OnePlus Nord or Nord 2 aside, the Nord CE 5G is perhaps one of the few phones that is offering a new Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset in this price range. Other devices are either sticking to older Snapdragon variants or chipsets from MediaTek. The OnePlus Nord CE 5G with good display, battery life, promising performance and regular software updates is offering a unique value proposition that very few smartphones in this price range can match.

After using the OnePlus Nord CE 5G with 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage for a few days, here’s our review.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G launch prices:

OnePlus Nord CE 5G (6GB RAM + 128GB storage): Rs 22,999 (Charcoal colour)

OnePlus Nord CE 5G (8GB RAM + 128GB storage): Rs 24,999 (Blue, Charcoal colours)

OnePlus Nord CE 5G (12GB RAM + 256GB storage): Rs 27,999 (Blue, Charcoal, Silver colours)

OnePlus Nord CE 5G design and display

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G carries the same form factor but there are some changes like the rear panel has a frost look and matte feel while there is one less camera lens at the back. The front of the device is identical to the original Nord. The design is very similar to the new affordable 5G phones from Oppo. The OnePlus logo at the back is the only differentiator. All affordable smartphones nowadays look the same and the OnePlus Nord CE 5G just adds to the list.

The device is mostly made of plastic including the frame. Also, there’s no Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, which is there on the older OnePlus Nord.

Having said that, the build quality is good and it’s a sturdy phone. It’s quite sleek and lightweight too. Even if you have small hands, you will not face much difficulties in using this phone with one hand. While the Nord CE 5G doesn’t feature a fresh design, it looks appealing. And for someone upgrading from a budget smartphone, the Nord CE 5G will be a delight.

Interestingly, OnePlus has included the headphone jack at the bottom in the Nord CE 5G. The reason is simple: Most affordable phones have it and OnePlus doesn’t want to lose the race. If you are planning to use the device to make YouTube videos then note that the device doesn’t support external mics while recording video. So, you will not be able to record audio from any mic despite the 3.5mm jack being present.

The device comes in three colour options-- Charcoal, Blue and Silver. But the choice of all three colours is only available for the top-end model. The 6GB RAM variant comes in one colour-- Charcoal.

Talking about the display, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G features a 6.43-inch AMOLED punch hole display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and pixel density of 410 ppi. There's a 90Hz refresh rate and aspect ratio of 20:9. The display quality is good with decent sunlight legibility. You will have no complaints regarding the picture quality while watching movies or playing games. Also, there’s the option to calibrate the colour and tone of the display as per your liking. You can also reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz if you wish to save battery.

This is a dual SIM phone and inside the box you get the Warp Charge 30 power adapter, Warp Type-C cable, a case and screen protector (pre-applied). There’s no microSD card slot.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G camera

OnePlus has introduced certain changes in the Nord CE 5G. Instead of the dual selfie cameras in the Nord, the CE version has one camera in the front. Also, the primary camera is changed and the Nord CE 5G now has a 64MP primary Sony IMX 471 sensor instead of the 48MP Sony IMX586 main sensor that was present in the original Nord.

The Nord CE 5G has a triple camera setup at the back with a 64MP primary Sony IMX 471 sensor along with F1.79 aperture, auto focus, EIS along with 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP mono secondary sensors. The device supports 4K video recording at 30FPS, 1080P recording at 30 or 60FPS along with support for slow motion video at up to 240FPS at 720P resolution.

As far the camera quality is concerned, a bit of tweaking in the Pro mode will give you better results. You will be mostly using the 64 MP primary camera. There’s little reason for the 2MP monochrome sensor to exist as it is only used when you are clicking a photo in Black and White using the Mono filter.

The 8MP secondary sensor kicks in when you zoom out to the ultra wide mode. While you can fit more people using the ultra wide angle mode, the image quality is not good as the 8MP sensor cannot capture much detail. Also, in low lighting conditions, the 8MP ultrawide sensor is of little use.

Given the limited use cases of the 8MP and 2MP secondary sensors, it appears that OnePlus has just added these sensors to call the Nord CE 5G a triple camera phone and follow the market trend. Else, OnePlus could have focused more only on the “core” aspects and just opt for a single 64MP camera.

The 64MP primary sensor is quite capable and will easily please you with colours and detailing. Images taken under lowlight from the primary camera also produce good output. However, this phone is not the best if you are planning to record video for your YouTube channel. The colours and detailing is not something you will be proud of and without mic support it just adds up the hassle of making videos.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G performance

OnePlus Nord CE 5G is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G 5G SoC, Adreno 619 GPU and comes with LPDDR4X RAM in capacities of 6GB, 8GB and 12GB. Storage capacities include 128GB and 256GB. The older OnePlus Nord offered a Snapdragon 765G 5G SoC that was powered by Kryo 475 CPU. The new Snapdragon 750G 5G chipset has Kryo 570 CPU.

Now, you may feel like drilling down into individual specs of both these chipsets to debate whether the Nord CE 5G is an upgrade or a downgrade when compared to the Nord. But the reality is there isn’t much to differentiate in the performance. Both the devices handle day-to-day tasks well and most average users will not even feel any difference. And the fact that there are few phones that are even offering a new Snapdragon 7 series chipset makes the OnePlus Nord CE 5G desirable.

The Nord CE 5G will easily cater to your multitasking needs and offers reliable gaming experience too. The device may get heated on prolonged usage but that will not slow down the phone. Overall, it’s a smooth device for gaming, watching content and other regular chores. But be prepared for some occasional lags while loading heavy apps.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G runs OxygenOS based on the Android 11 operating system. The good thing is that you will get two Android updates including the latest Android 12 along with three years of security update. But what you should know is that OnePlus did not have a good track record of providing clean updates to the OnePlus Nord. OnePlus had to pause the OxygenOS 11 update after users complained about buggy experience due to the update.

The biggest USP of the OnePlus Nord CE 5G in this price range is the software. OxygenOS is clean and nearly stock Android, offering a smooth experience. You don’t have to deal with bloatware or other unwanted features which you find in other phones made by BBK that use ColorOS.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G Battery and charging

OnePlus Nord CE 5G is powered by a 4,500mAh battery which will easily last you a little more than a day on average usage. The battery is backed by 30W fast charging (Warp Charge 30T Plus fast charging 5V/6A). The charging time and battery life is definitely a big advantage for the OnePlus Nord CE 5G.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G review: Verdict

This phone is similar to the OnePlus Nord in terms of experience. So, for Nord users this phone makes little sense. But if you are planning to upgrade from a budget smartphone then the new OnePlus Nord CE 5G is definitely a good choice.

It’s a reliable phone which does its job well with good performance and pleasing design. But the biggest advantage of buying the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is that you get a smooth software experience, the promise of Android updates, good battery life and charging speed. The Nord CE 5G will easily cater to all the needs of most smartphone users in India minus all the jazz in this price range.
